The Last Black Swan

*Note: This is a play that I have been working on for the last 6 months. It is going into production at my college in January with me directing. This is just a excerpt and if you guys want the full thing (its about 20 pages long) then I can upload it to Mediashare for you guys to download. Feel free to comment.

DANIEL: Open this door.
DEATH: Mr. Upton, you need to calm down. This will only take a few minutes and then I
will have you on your way. You have
nothing to worry about.
DANIEL: Open this door right now.
DEATH: I can’t do that.
DANIEL: And why not?
DEATH: It’s not time yet.
DANIEL: What the hell do you mean it’s not time yet? Open this door.
Death smiles wryly and walks straight up to Daniel and
looks him in eye.
DEATH: I can’t do that.
You need to sit down.
Daniel looks into Death’s eyes for a minute sizing her
up. He sees something in her eyes and
falls silent. He slowly backs up. Death smiles.
DANIEL: Who are you?
Death admires his insightfulness with a bigger smile.
DEATH: I am tired of playing games Mr. Upton. Please sit down and I’ll have you on your
way.
DANIEL: I am NOT answering any questions or anything until
you tell me what the hell is going on.
DEATH: (smile
disappears) You really don’t know, do you?
Death runs her hands through her hair and sighs. There is a moment of silence as Death looks
for words.
DEATH: Mr.
Upton…um…all right… What’s the last thing you remember?
DANIEL: What the hell are you talking about?
DEATH: What’s the last thing you remember?
DANIEL: This is bull shit.
Tell me what is going on.
She doesn’t say anything.
Daniel is frustrated. He walks
over to the other door and tries to open it.
It is still locked.
DEATH: Tell me the last thing you remember.
DANIEL: What the hell
does it matter? I was driving down the
Interstate cause I was going to be late to my meeting and a truck swerved… Oh my God.
That truck…
DEATH: That’s right.
(Flips a few pages). A high speed car chase was happening on the
Interstate you were on. The criminal
clipped you doing 106 miles per hour.
DANIEL: Oh my God. (Daniel sits)
DEATH: Your car went
into the ditch. And… here you are with
me. In this place.
Death sits beside
Daniel. Death looks at Daniel. He is taking this news remarkably well.
DANIEL: You’re lying
to me. That’s it. I mean, if I was dead I would be in heaven… I
wouldn’t be in a fucking waiting room. I
would go to heaven…
Daniel stops suddenly he has put all the pieces together
in his head. He knows she is telling the
truth. He looks around still flustered
and not wanting to believe.
DEATH: You’re dead Mr. Upton. I’m very sorry.

DANIEL: Open this door.
DEATH: Mr. Upton, you need to calm down. This will only take a few minutes and then I
